The different areas you will travel through have unique looks and you can see the effort the developers put in to make it beautiful. The graphics are adequate for a game of this caliber and the artwork looks good. I have a regular Xbox One, so that might be a factor, but I think it could be better for a game like this. They are incredibly frequent and incredibly long. Fights more than once occure in narrow passages which causes some of your melee guys to not be able to do anything. Your companions can easily block each other's way. It is pretty horrible when it comes to combat. You can save and load at anytime, which makes it easier and the game overall (obviously) less frustrating.

But maybe the game is meant to be played in trial and error kinda way. You can get quests early on which will result in getting stomped if you do them right away. It can also be confusing when to do certain quests. But there's always the option to play on easy and to not really pay attention to character builds or damage types. The amount of options you have for every character when leveling up can be overwhelming for someone who doesn't play RPGs much and the gameplay mechanics can be confusing. It's what you'd expect of a game like this, a sort of turnbased RPG, like a top down Dragon Age Origins, only this game is more hardcore than Dragon Age. The gameplay is allright and quite fun at times. Overall the story is exciting, if you keep paying attention that is, and the lore is eloborate. If you're not much of a reader you might consider skipping it. It's a bit too overly poetic for my taste, but I think there are enough people who willl enjoy it, except if you don't like reading ofcourse. It seems the developers put a lot of effort in the writing. In general, it's just a much superior experience.RPG lovers are gonna love it. For one, the loading times are dramatically shorter, and you can increase the resolution further. The game itself is amazing, quite possibly one of the best I've ever played, but if you have a powerful gaming PC, just get it on that. It's a shame that Pillars of Eternity II isn't a great port.

You run into one even when you're exploring the same building! I can't imagine how slow it is on the base Xbox One's built-in hard drive or an external hard drive. I installed Pillars of Eternity II on an external solid-state drive and the loading screens were still unbearable. There are also lengthy loading screens whenever you enter a new area that detract from immersion. In my opinion, the issue appears to be a lack of optimization rather than a technical limitation of the console. It's unclear why this game couldn't hit a consistent 60 FPS on Xbox One X. Pillars of Eternity II is a complex game mechanically, but its visuals are definitely not that.

Let's hope that just like A Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep, the game receives an Xbox One X patch after launch. It's odd that Obsidian Entertainment – an Xbox Game Studios team – and their partners at Grip Digital, didn't put in more effort to improve it for Microsoft's latest console. The performance is also patchy depending on the area you're in and seems to be locked to 30 frames per second (FPS).

The resolution appears to be 1080p and the textures are quite blurry at times. Pillars of Eternity II doesn't feature any Xbox One X enhancements. Pillars 2 (Image credit: Windows Central)
